Oh my gosh!!! We just played this game with our youth group- we actually had a very small group tonight- there were only 3 adults and 2 kids! But we LOOOOOOOOOOVED this game! We played for 45 minutes and were all crying ourselves to tears! It was hilarious! Thank you for the game. Everyone kept asking where I found this game! So. Good.

Sydney, good point. It is a more complicated game. But I’ve found that once everyone gets the hang of it, it’s easy and fun to play and works really well for teenagers. I’ve also played in big family groups with ages ranging from adults to pre-teens and it’s been a lot of fun; the older players can kind of help the younger ones out. Maybe more laughing and silliness will be involved, but hey, that can be fun too. But I think you’re right in that it wouldn’t be the best game for a big group of little kids.

I think two things might have been happening. When I tried the medium word list and realized they were too hard, I switched back to the easy list. That reset the easy list so we were back at the beginning. Then the other thing that happened (haha, complicated!) was we went through the whole list (I think) of easy words but never got notified that we had reached the end, and we saw the same words. However, it is possible that we switched to medium a few times and so that kept us from seeing all the words on the easy list because it ‘resets’ us back to the beginning. Sorry! I will let you know if it is a problem in the near future… but if no one else says anything, I’d say don’t worry about it! But more words would still be nice! Thanks so much!

Amanda, that’s awesome! I love Howl’s Moving Castle! Someone showed me the movie by Hayao Miyazaki a few years ago and I liked it so much I read the book and of course loved it even more. Great game ideas! I especially love “Castles and Calcifer.” It makes me want to have a Howl’s Moving Castle-themed party just to play. Thanks for sharing!

I love it! I just used this game today for my High School Lit Club. We finished Howl’s Moving Castle so I changed it to “Castles and Calcifer.” They loved it!
Also used Green Glass Door but changed it to “I’m going through Howl’s Door…”

Dave, thanks so much for the feedback! Glad the word lists helped you and your students have a great time! That’s really good feedback about the word list length, too. In some ways the easy word lists are the hardest, but I’ll definitely work on bulking it up when I can. Can I ask, when you say you ran into the same words, do you mean they shuffled back through and repeated themselves before you had finished the list? The word generator is supposed to have a feature that gives you every word once, then gives you an alert that you’ve finished the list and gives you an option to start over again. If that’s not happening, I’d like to fix it.

Thank you so much! I just used your words from the online generator to play with my ESL students. It was great fun! We just used it with an online timer to play “catch-phrase.” I think the words were really good actually. The only suggestion I have would be to add more words (if possible) to the ‘easy’ section. We ran into the same words semi-often. Anyway, I tried the medium words and they were too hard, so I went back to easy. The students were intermediate-beginner level. Needless to say, we really had a great time! Thanks!

Charades is a new family and friend favorite. This has become the first choice of family fun in the last few weeks. It has topped any electronic choices and that is FANTASTIC. Ooh, that one’s trickier. Well, when you assign points to a team for drawing and guessing a word correctly, you could also sign an individual point to the artist. Keep track of both team and individual points throughout the whole game, and then at the end you could have an individual winner: either the person on the winning team with the most points, or just the person from any team with the most points overall. If there’s a tie, you could have one more quick round of pictionary as a tiebreaker. Would that work?

Carrie, That sounds like a great party! If you're playing at Christmas, check out my Christmas pictionary word list. And then as far as how to play with your group, you could always have 4 or 5 small white boards or paper pads on easels, one for each team, and just have each team send up one person to draw at a time. Give all the artists the same word to draw. Then have the 4 or 5 people drawing, with their team members guessing, and whichever team guesses the word first gets the point. Then a new set of artists comes up. I've never played with that many teams at one time, but if you have that many easels, it could definitely work! If you're not set on having 4 or 5 teams, I would say a great way to play with 20 people would be to just have 2 teams of 10. Then play the same way, but you don't need as many drawing surfaces.
